Update – The Mystic dream Bone Reading Set is no longer available.
This entry looks at bone reading sets offered by Lucky Mojo and The Mystic Dream. Both sets have enough pieces to introduce you to bone reading and allow you to try your hand at it. The Lucky Mojo Bone Reading Set has 15 pieces and the Mystic Dream’s Modern Conjure Brand Bone Kit has 9. Both come in a bag – Lucky Mojo’s in an unbleached muslin bag, the Mystic Dream’s in a black velvet bag. The Mystic Dream set is less expensive – $21.00 as opposed to Lucky Mojo’s $27.00, but again, it has fewer pieces. Both sets come with an inventory card that lists the pieces included in the set. This can vary from set to set depending on the availability of various bones and curios. The Lucky Mojo set also comes with a list of other bones and curios available for sale to enhance the set. Additionally it has a sheet with that provides a brief background on bone reading, and information on how to do a bone reading. It describes how to throw the bones and provides meanings for many bones and curios, including those that you are most likely to get in your set. I have two sets of Lucky Mojo bones. One was purchased when I visited the store in last fall and the other was included in the price of a workshop given by cat yronwode that I attended in December. Ten of the items were the same in both sets, with five varying between the two. Although some pieces were different, I would call them equivalent as the pieces that differed were of a similar type – an Abalone shell in one and a Philippine Nutmeg shell in the other, or a brass bell in one and a skeleton key in the other. Both sets contain enough pieces to get you started, but I can’t think of any readers I know who have not added pieces to their sets. That doesn’t mean that you have to, but for many people there will be a strong urge to do so to personalize your set and to enhance your readings, and because finding new pieces for your set is fun.
